Anywhere Festival presents: Women Up Front - the Missing Beats

To celebrate the creative perspective of women we have made an event of 3 nights with all acts fronted by women.

The new Songs of Tom Smith album is called The Missing Beats and is inspired by the unrecognised women writers of the Beat Generation. It features the singing voices of 2 Adelaide women: Jo Zealand and Susie Skinner.

Tix: General Admission $15/Concession $5

The songs on the album take their subject matter from the work of women such as Diane di Prima, Bonnie Bremser, Joan Volmer, Caroline Cassady and Joyce Johnson. They not only wrote, published or facilitated vital work but also supported the men who were happy to benefit from their labour. Men like Kerouac, Burroughs and Ginsberg may have set out to challenge the status quo but often ended up abusing the privileges of the very power structures they hoped to dismantle.

Trigger Warning:

Having to live on the fringes of society to pursue a creative life put the women depicted in these songs in danger of sexual assault, illegal abortions, having children taken away, domestic violence and even institutionalisation. The songs are intended to promote thought and discussion but may be disturbing for some people.

Check out the other great acts on the bills who will be singing songs based on their own experiences and perspectives as creative women. Each event will include a solo act as opener, followed by The Missing Beats performance and a final act to close out the evening and get the audience up and dancing.
